Non-contact thickness measurement of functional coatings on engine components

Measuring the thickness of functional coatings on engine components before they have been cured allows corrections to be made early in the process. In this contribution we present process improvements of this kind using the example of different suppliers to the automotive industry, and show how measuring a polymer coating immediately after it has been applied helps to increase the quality of the coating and prevents parts from being rejected.

Alternative additive manufacturing application for a new concept of assembled camshaft

The use of camshafts is very widespread in the automotive field. Usually, they comprise a bar and cams fixed by interference by means of different state-of-the-art approaches. In this context, the aim of the present invention is to provide an alternative method for the manufacturing of this class of components that will improve the efficiency and flexibility of the process. The innovation involves the deposition of an additive manufacturing profile on the bar in order to realise a coupling stretch where the cam can be fixed by interference. To investigate this concept, some preliminary prototypes were manufactured with the material and the process parameters selected after a design of experiment activity on samples. Finally, torsion rig tests were performed on both the innovative assembly and a traditional coupling taken as reference, with positive results.

In the automotive industry, CO2 reduction has been one of the major disruptive source of changes in the car in the last decade. In order to be efficient in terms of CO2 reduction, downsizing, electrification and hybridisation of powertrain need to be implemented with a minimum design margin. This objective can only be achieved by involving a more automated chain for design of experiment, based on simulation models. This paper introduces a new component-based simulation model for powertrain. The aim is to allow users to evaluate early feasibility, process and performance and detail validation within a unified model.

Metal injection moulding components for high-performance engines

Metal injection moulding (MIM) is a well-established manufacturing method for complex, high-precision components. The MIM process enables processing of a wide range of different materials, ranging from tool steels to stainless steels and nickel-based alloys. It is a very resource-efficient process and offers maximum freedom in component design. These characteristics combined with good mechanical properties make MIM the perfect option for components in high-performance engines. In this talk we will give a brief overview of the MIM process, including its advantages and limitations. These will be exemplified in a detailed case study of finger follower.
